Properly Storing disposable electrodes and mouthpieces, as well as cables, ensures good quality tests and helps you make the most of your devices. Not doing so might mean to spend more money than budgeted replacing damaged goods.

These disposables for our EKGs and spirometers need to be kept under proper temperature and environment conditions to ensure their life. Not taking those precautions may lead to inaccurate results in tests, having to repeat them due to malfunction while using them in the patient or, in the case of cables, having to replace them too early. In this article we will give you a few tips to make sure you give them proper treatment, so you don’t have to get rid of them and, therefore, wasting money getting new ones.

Storing disposable electrodes and mouthpieces

Our high-quality electrodes and mouthpieces . While heat can ruin the gel of electrodes, cold can affect the material our mouthpieces are made of and provoke tiny fractures in them.

On the other hand, make sure to keep the mouthpieces in their original package, they should be opened before using them the patient. packages bacteria and dust, the results of the test and become a potential hazard for patient´s pulmonary health.

The electrodes must be kept in their original sealed bags, so they can withstand the test of time until they are used. To store electrodes, reseal the electrode package by folding over the open end and placing the package in an airtight container or resealable bag to ensure the remaining electrodes will not dry out. Electrodes will dry out quickly if left open and exposed to the elements.

Here are other useful recommendations that it is convenient to keep in mind:

  • Avoid storing mouthpieces and electrodes where there is the possibility they get exposed to especially of chemical liquids, like cleaning products or printer toners.
  • Get rid of electrodes or mouthpieces that have a change of color or texture.
  • Always use original Schiller´s disposables to operate our devices, we can´t guarantee their proper function unless you do so.

Maintaining cables in good condition

Schiller cables are designed to have along-lasting life. To ensure that this happens it is necessary to take a few precautions. These suggestions are common sense, but as they say that common sense is not common, let’s look at them:

  • Do not immerse the cables in liquid and do not sterilize them!
  • Do not apply tension to the sensor cables.
  • Do not use aggressive cleaners on them.
  • Do not use any phenol-based agents or peroxide compounds for cleaning.
  • Observe the manufacturer's notes when cleaning the sensors and cables.
  • Do not bend cables, roll them in circular form to store them.

As you can see, it is not hard to take proper care of the disposables or cables that our devices use. Doing so requires easy to keep precautions that will save you time and money.
